In peacetime, they are disadvantaged by social norms, discrimination, and gender-based violence, which are only exacerbated in wartime. With examples from around the continent, this video shows how sexual violence has historically been a central part of conflict and repression in Africa. It advocates for survivors to be key participants in decision-making for peacebuilding and transitional justice initiatives that seek to address their experiences.

This documentary captures the voices of a few African practitioners working on issues related to war trauma, torture, violence, healing and wellbeing in the African continent. They reflect on Africa as a wounded continent, which impacts on the wellbeing of its people in various ways across generations. Through their work on the ground they highlight the challenges and opportunities for healing and emphasise the importance of incorporating contextual realities and local knowledge into the development of any intervention. Thoughts on decolonising mental health in Africa and recommendations on a way forward are touched on. This video is from the CSVR Symposium Webinar Series "Blended Voices: Building an Understanding of Torture, War Trauma and Violence through an African Lens," held from October 2020 to March 2021.

African, postcolonial and other critical theories and thought have come to highlight the coercive, erosive and persistent nature of Western conceptions of mental health. This includes the continuation of biomedical and public health approaches to mental health, which neglect lived experiences, alternative views of health as well as aspects of power, domination and oppression. This video focuses on alternative conceptualisations of mental health in the African context. It includes a history of mental health emanating from and embedded in Africa and current localised approaches to mental health as well as rehabilitation. The video is part of the CSVR Symposium Webinar Series "Blended Voices: Building an Understanding of Torture, War Trauma and Violence through an African Lens," held from October 2020 to March 2021.
