The basic purpose of this study is to provide a baseline understanding of the role of international assistance in the TRC process, upon which future policy can be built. Duncan McPherson looks first to analyse the
instances of international assistance provided to the TRC to determine what aid worked well and why or why not. He then seeks to extract lessons from the TRC to guide future international efforts in support of truth commissions in post-conflict and transitional states.
